What Are White Fillings & When Are They Used?
White fillings, also known as composite or tooth-coloured fillings, are restorations used to repair areas of a tooth that have been affected by decay, wear, damage or an existing filling that needs attention.
Unlike traditional silver-coloured amalgam restorations, composite material can be selected to complement the shade of the surrounding tooth. This makes white fillings particularly useful in visible areas, although they may also be suitable for other teeth depending on the size, position and clinical requirements of the restoration.
You may be advised to consider a filling if you have:
Tooth decay or a cavity
A chipped or damaged tooth
A worn or broken filling
Sensitivity linked to a damaged restoration
Food trapping around an existing filling
A visible restoration you would like assessed
Damage that needs restoring before it becomes more extensive
The NHS guidance on tooth decay explains that fillings may be needed when decay has created a cavity in a tooth.
Natural-Looking Appearance
Composite material can be matched closely to the surrounding tooth, helping the restoration appear less noticeable when you smile or speak.
Restores Damaged Teeth
A filling replaces tooth structure that has been lost through decay, wear or minor damage, helping restore the shape and function of the tooth.
Versatile Treatment Option
Tooth-coloured material can be used for a variety of restorative concerns. Suitability depends on factors including the tooth involved, the amount of remaining healthy structure and the forces placed on the restoration.
Supports Smile Aesthetics
For patients who prefer less visible dental work, white fillings can complement other cosmetic dentistry treatments while still addressing a restorative need.
Can Silver Amalgam Fillings Be Replaced With White Fillings?
Sometimes, but an existing amalgam filling does not automatically need replacing simply because it is silver.
If an older filling is cracked, failing, uncomfortable or no longer protecting the tooth effectively, we can assess whether replacing it with a tooth-coloured restoration is appropriate. If the existing filling remains stable and the tooth is healthy, unnecessary replacement may not be recommended.
The decision depends on the condition of the filling, how much healthy tooth remains, the position of the tooth and the type of restoration needed.
Our aim is to explain your options clearly so you can make an informed decision rather than recommending treatment that is not necessary.

Assessment & Diagnosis
We first examine the tooth and discuss any symptoms, previous dental work and concerns you have about its appearance or comfort.
Treatment Planning & Advice
If a filling is appropriate, we explain what needs to be treated, the available options and the expected cost before treatment begins.
Tooth Preparation & Restoration
The affected area is carefully prepared before the tooth-coloured material is placed and shaped to restore the missing tooth structure.
Shaping & Bite Check
The filling is refined and your bite is checked so that the restoration feels comfortable when your teeth meet.

How Long Do White Fillings Last?
There is no single lifespan that applies to every white filling.
How long a restoration lasts can depend on:
- The size and position of the filling
- How much natural tooth remains
- Your bite and chewing forces
- Teeth grinding or clenching
- Daily oral hygiene
- Diet
- The condition of the surrounding tooth
- Regular dental reviews
Smaller restorations in favourable conditions may perform well for many years, while larger or heavily loaded fillings may require maintenance or replacement sooner.
We will explain what is realistic for your individual tooth rather than offering a one-size-fits-all expectation.

They may be. Suitability depends on the size of the restoration, the condition of the tooth and the forces placed on it. We assess these factors before recommending treatment.
Composite filling material can be selected to complement your natural tooth colour, helping the restoration blend with the surrounding tooth.
Yes, when replacement is clinically appropriate. An old filling may need attention if it is cracked, worn, failing or if decay has developed around it. Sound fillings do not necessarily need replacing.
No. White fillings are restorative treatments used to repair damaged or decayed teeth. Their tooth-coloured appearance also provides an aesthetic advantage.
Your treatment needs will be assessed before work begins, and suitable options can then be explained. You can review our price list and find further answers on our dental FAQs.
Arrange an assessment if you notice tooth sensitivity, pain when biting, a cracked or rough filling, food trapping or visible damage. Earlier assessment may help prevent the problem becoming more extensive.
