DENTISTS IN WAKEFIELD

Look After Your Oral Health with Our Private Dentists & Dental Hygienists in Wakefield

We recommend all patients have regular dental check-ups with the dentist and dental hygiene; they are essential to prevent decay and secure healthy gums and teeth.

We offer the full range of general dental services at our Wakefield dental practice, such as white fillings, root canals, tooth extractions and specialist treatments such as orthodontic treatment, the full range of cosmetic braces, dental implants, crowns, bridges and dentures. At Smile Design Studio, we believe that prevention is certainly better than cure. We use the latest equipment and dental materials, so you can guarantee you are getting the best treatment.

Catherine, our Dental hygienist, is highly skilled and will professionally clean your teeth using the most up-to-date technology to remove any oral plaque and tartar, which can not be removed by brushing or flossing products alone. This procedure will help patients to get healthier teeth and prevent mouth infections and gum disease.

In addition to an ultrasonic scale and polish, we offer the latest prophy flex power clean system, which creates a jet of compressed air, water and fine sodium bicarbonate particles at your teeth to polish the surface and remove debris. It cleans your teeth thoroughly, removing superficial stains and giving you an instantly whiter smile.

We offer direct access to our hygienist. You do not have to be a patient of Smile Design Studio and can book in as and when required for your dental hygiene visits!

Regular dental care for your child

In general, children should visit the dentist at least once every 6 months. This allows for regular dental care to be performed by the dentist, including a dental exam, cleaning, fluoride treatment and x-ray.

If your child has a healthy check-up with no issues, this does not mean you shouldn’t visit the dentist again for 12 months. Missing an appointment means that your child can go an entire year without a proper check-up, and this can allow important dental hygiene issues to go unchecked, including tooth decay, hidden cavities and inflammation.

Regular 6-month check-ups allow your dentist to determine if your child’s brushing habits are effective, if they are brushing too hard or not enough, and if hard to diagnose cavities are present. Healthy check-ups are not proof that your child should visit the dentist less, rather they are proof that your visits are worthwhile and that the regular cleaning and fluoride treatment are working to keep your child’s teeth healthy and issue free. 01. Should my child receive dental x-rays during each visit?
Dental x-rays have a long history of safe usage as an important tool for diagnosing hard to see cavities, impacted teeth and other issues with children’s teeth that may be missed during a visual inspection. For those parents that have concerns about radiation, know that our pediatric dentists use digital x-rays that are high speed and limit the amount of exposure time to much less radiation than traditional x-ray machines. Additionally, the amount of radiation involved in dental x-rays is extremely low and the exposure from it represents only a minor contribution when compared to other sources, both natural and man-made. As we touched on above, one of the most important things to remember is that the pain is temporary, lasting a few days at the most. If it’s any longer make sure to let us know!
02. What if my child has recurring oral hygiene issues?
While checkups every 6 months are the recommended method for maintaining good oral health for your child, those kids that are experiencing recurring dental hygiene issues, such as cavities, inflammation or tooth decay, should visit the pediatric dentist every 3 months. Recurring issues can become problematic for children who are only getting started in developing their dental habits and this is a crucial time to ensure proper cleaning and that the adult teeth that come in are arriving in a healthy oral environment. Since baby teeth make space for the eventual arrival of adult teeth, it is essential that these teeth are maintained properly. To prevent recurring issues with your child’s teeth, try to keep an eye on their diet, their brushing habits, and any pain they may be experiencing in their mouth, or inflammation that can be seen. Avoid sugary foods, especially before bedtime, and try to reinforce brushing with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day. And, as always, make sure they are visiting an experienced pediatric dentist that can keep their teeth clean and answer any questions that parents may have about their dental hygiene and effective daily habits.
03. What is fluoride varnish?
Fluoride varnish is, as the name suggests, a liquid which contains a high concentration of fluoride. It may also come in the form of a gel. A thin layer is applied directly to the teeth. It then hardens and releases fluoride into the enamel.
04. Benefits of fluoride varnish
Tooth decay in children is a big problem throughout the world. In the UK, almost half of children have some decay by age 8, and it affects a third of 5-year-olds. Fluoride varnish treatment has been proven to reduce the prevalence of dental caries in milk teeth by 37% and permanent teeth by 43% It's particularly effective for children who are at high risk of decay and who are not exposed to fluoride from other sources. Applying fluoride varnish can also help reverse early signs of tooth decay (white spot lesions) Fluoride varnish treatment is quick, simple, and non-invasive. It must be carried out by a dental professional, but doesn't need to be done in a dentist's office. It might be carried out at your child's school or nursery, for example, as part of a community program. This can make it less daunting than being treated in the dentist's chair Another preventative treatment often offered to children with permanent teeth is fissure sealant. This fills in deep grooves and pits in the biting surfaces of the teeth, making them easier to clean and reducing the chances of decay
05. Fluoride varnish risks and side effects
Although fluoride varnish is a very safe and widely practiced treatment, it is not suitable for everyone. One of the risks of over-exposure to fluoride is dental fluorosis, a condition which results in discoloration or white spots on the teeth while they are developing. The amount of fluoride exposure from varnish treatment shouldn't pose a significant risk because it is applied topically, not ingested. That said, do make sure your child spits out all excess toothpaste after brushing – especially in the days following fluoride varnish treatment. If they regularly swallow fluoride toothpaste, the risk of fluorosis increases. If you or your child take fluoride drops or tablets, mention this before receiving treatment. You may be advised not to have fluoride varnish at all, or to stop taking the other supplement for a few days after the varnish is applied. Patients with a medical history of allergies should be individually assessed before treatment to reduce the risk of fluoride varnish side effects. Specifically, patients may not be treated if they have allergies to sticking plaster (which contains colophony, also found in duraphat fluoride varnish) or food allergies or asthma which have resulted in hospitalization. Finally, if you or your child have any mouth sores or ulcers on the day of treatment then it will probably be postponed.

Gum Disease and Periodontal Disease Treatments

There are two types of gum disease, gingivitis and periodontal disease (also known as periodontics). Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease, which can be treated with good oral hygiene and cleaning treatments. Symptoms of gingivitis include bleeding gums (usually after brushing), tender, swollen gums and redness in the gum. If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, book your appointment today and let one of our experienced and skilled dentists in Wakefield provide you with the appropriate care and treatment.

What are the signs and symptoms of gum problems?

Here at Smile Design Studio we are here to offer help and advise when it comes to dealing with gum disease. If gingivitis is left untreated it can develop into periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is an advanced form of gum disease, which causes permanent damage to supportive bone tissue and the gums. Periodontal disease causes pockets to develop between the teeth and gums, which can become infected with painful abscesses. As the bone becomes increasingly damaged, the tooth starts to come loose in the sockets and eventually falls out. Symptoms of advanced gum disease can include dental pain, sore, tender gums and receding gums. Periodontal disease can eventually lead to abscesses and the need for tooth extractions.

What treatments are available for gum disease?

Treatment for advanced gum disease is designed to reverse and prevent the condition from getting worse. Treatments include intensive cleaning of the actual root surfaces to debride the area of the harmful bacteria as well as basic dental hygiene treatments such as scaling and polishing.

Preventing gum disease

We believe that prevention is better than cure and we actively encourage all our patients to attend regular dental check-ups and dental hygiene sessions so we can detect any early signs of gum disease or periodontics. We also promote a good daily oral hygiene routine and our expert dentists and dental hygienists are happy to discuss oral hygiene products, brushing tips and healthy eating to try and promote food oral health and ensure that you have healthy, strong teeth and a beautiful smile.

Diagnosis incl. X-Rays

A visual examination will not always give you the necessary information, X-rays are beneficial for the dentist diagnosis for possible decay and diseases that are not visible to the naked eye.
Radiographs (X-rays) gives us the whole picture, and we can see the condition of your teeth, roots, jaw placement and bone composition. With this we can find and treat dental problems before they become too serious or advanced.
Dental X-rays can show:
- Small areas of decay between the teeth
- Decay underneath fillings
- Abscesses
- Bone loss in the jaw
- Position of the teeth to determine the best kind of treatment available, braces, implants dentures
tooth extractions Wakefield

Tooth Extractions

Before the procedure your dentist will assess the affected tooth and gums surrounding, x-rays will be taken checking bone levels and the extent of damage.
Local anesthetic is injected to numb the affected tooth and gum tissue. Your dentist will gently loosen the tooth and carefully lift it from its socket. When the tooth is removed the socket is cleaned, and a piece of sterile gauzed is placed over the extraction site you will be asked to bite down with firm steady pressure. This helps slow the bleeding while clotting takes place. The gauze will be removed once the bleeding has slowed enough. We provide you with detailed aftercare instructions, but for 24 hours following your extraction, you should not smoke, rinse your mouth vigorously.
The most important thing after a tooth extraction is keeping the area clean to prevent infection.
